Presented is a 1933 Moe Berg original News Service Photo (PSA Type I).
Berg was an intellectual graduate of Princeton University, as a magna
cum laude Modern Language major, and then he graduated from Columbia Law
School. He played 15 seasons in the Major Leagues, mostly as a backup
catcher. He played for five Major League teams, and although he only
batted a career .243 with merely six homers, he was a fine defensive
receiver renowned for helping guide pitchers. He reportedly did work for
the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA, for
whom he also worked. In short, Berg was a baseball player who also
became a spy. Berg played for the Washington Senators from 1932-34. In
the offered 1933 photo, Berg, the team's second-string catcher poses
with Luke Sewell, the first-string catcher on Berg's right, and Cliff
Bolton, the Senators' third string catcher, on Berg's left. After Berg's
baseball career, several books were written about Berg's unusual and
exciting life, including The Catcher Was a Spy, more recently made into a movie starring Paul Rudd. The
offered photo measures approx. 7x9". It has a few minor creases and a
small spot of paper loss. The back of the photo has an Associated Press
stamp. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "AUTHENTIC
AUTO."
