Presented is a 1929 Homer Peel Philadelphia Phillies Uniform Player Contract under which the outfielder was signed for a salary of $750.00 per month. Peel played five Major League seasons: St. Louis Cardinals (1927 & 1930), Philadelphia Phillies (1930), and New York Giants (1933-34). Peel was a star player for many years in the Texas League, but he struggled in hitting Major League pitching, batting a career .238. In the 1929 season, Peel played in 53 games, batting .269. On the bottom of the front page of the contract is the signature of National League President John Heydler. On the top of the contract, an unknown hand, writing in black fountain ink, has scripted, "This contract is hereby assigned to the St. Louis [Cardinals] Baseball Club." The foregoing was signed by the Phillies chief executive, William Baker, dated 12/16/29. Also, signing are Peel, National League President John Heydler, and Gerry Nugent. The contract measures 8.5x11", it is triple folded and in good condition. Also, included is a 6.5x8.5" black & white photo of Peel. On back of the photo, written in red pencil by an unknown hand, is "Homer PEEL/(Phila Nat), Conlon Photo (referring to famed photographer Charles Conlon)."
