Displayed is an original Brown Brothers Type I photograph of the Polo Grounds, in upper Manhattan in New York City, during the playing of the 1912 World Series. That Series featured the New York Giants versus the Boston Red Sox, and that Fall Classic was won by Boston, 4-3 in games, with eight games being played, as Game 2 ended in a tie. Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard were the lead hurlers for the Giants. Mathewson went 0-2 in the World Series, although he had a terrific 0.94 ERA. Marquard had an even better Series ERA, at 0.50, and he went 2-0. Hall of Famer Smokey Joe Wood went 3-1 for Boston, whose hitting included a .290 Series average for Hall of Famer Harry Hooper and a .300 batting average for Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. The Polo Grounds displayed in the photo is generally known as Polo Grounds IV. Technically, the fourth version of the Polo Grounds was at first called Brush Stadium, in honor of New York Giants owner John T. Brush. But the stadium was still usually referred to as "The Polo Grounds" and by 1919 the venue was once again officially known as The Polo Grounds. The photo measures 4.75x5.9". The photo depicts a splendid view from the outfield seats. One can see societal mores at the time as the fans are overwhelmingly male, and so often dressed in suits. Notice, in this Dead Ball Era, how close the outfielders play. Also, the area behind the Polo Grounds included Coogan's Bluff, a wooded hillside later made famous by Bobby Thomson's home run to win the 1951 pennant, called "The Miracle of Coogan's Bluff." The photo has been encapsulated and authenticated by PSA as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The photo is in EXCELLENT condition. On back, an unknown hand has written in pencil, "Polo Grounds." The are also four photographer's stamps from the famous Brown Brothers.
