Historically significant vintage photograph capturing twenty-seven participants in the 1903 World Series posing together at the Huntingdon Avenue Grounds in Boston, including Honus Wagner and Cy Young. As noted by PSA in its accompanying LOA, this photo was produced in the 1920s from a duplicate negative, thereby defining it as Type IV. However, it must be understood that no Type I, Type II, or Type III example of this image has ever surfaced, making the offered photo the lone vintage survivor. In fact, we have never even seen a copy of this image, either online or in books. Photos of any kind from the first modern-day World Series in 1903 are scarce, especially those picturing both teams together. The only other group photo from the 1903 World Series we have seen (which is completely different from the offered photo) resides in the Boston Public Library. This unique photo was originally introduced to the collecting community in Lelands' December 2004 auction, where it realized a final sale price $6,095. It has never been offered for sale, either publicly or privately, since that time and has been directly consigned to this auction by the daughter of the original purchaser.
The crystal-clear photo pictures fourteen members of the Boston Pilgrims and thirteen members of the Pittsburgh Pirates as they pose standing together in front of the dugout. Honus Wagner is pictured second from the right, while Cy Young can be seen in the back row, near the center. A typed paper caption, affixed to the base of the photo, reads "Photo from the first World Series 1903 Boston vs. Pgh. Note: Honus Wagner second from right." The small photo (6.75x2.75") displays a few light creases and the reverse is partially covered with brown paper. Full LOA from PSA (Type IV).
