Presented is a 1948 Babe Ruth and Hank Greenberg International News Type I Photo. Both Hall of Fame sluggers have a Bronx connection. Ruth did most of his home run hitting for the Bronx Bombers, and Greenberg was born in The Bronx and was a star player at the borough's James Monroe High School. Ten years before the offered photo was taken, Greenberg put on an amazing challenge to Ruth's the single-season home run record of 60 as Greenberg blasted 58 round trippers for the '38 Detroit Tigers. The photo was apparently taken at Ruth's Riverside Drive apartment in upper Manhattan in New York City. Greenberg is in a suit and tie, and Ruth wears an elegant smoking jacket. On back is a suggested caption for the photograph, which reads, "A few weeks before he died of throat cancer, BABE RUTH was visited by the great Detroit slugger Hank Greenberg. July 1948." The back has an International News Service stamp and "Caption 11" written in pencil by an unknown hand. The photo has some small editing marks in the margins. Overall, the photo is in EXCELLENT condition. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The photo is poignant as Ruth autographs a photo for Greenberg - showing Ruth's thinning hair, and with his loss of weight somewhat concealed by his smoking jacket. Greenberg's smile and Ruth's determined look do not totally conceal the underlying sad subtext of the photo as a grown-up Bronx boy says goodbye to his, and most of America's, beloved idol.
