Displayed is a Tris Speaker signed government postcard with the Hall of Fame center fielder's signature having a Beckett auto grade of "MINT 9." Speaker, nicknamed "the Gray Eagle," played in the Major Leagues from 1907-28: Boston Americans/Red Sox (1907-15), Cleveland Indians (1916-26), Washington Senators (1927), Philadelphia Athletics (1928). Speaker owns the ninth-highest all-time MLB batting average (.345). He had 3,514 hits and 436 stolen bases. The 3-time World Champion was the AL MVP in 1912, and the AL batting champion in 1916. On defense, he played an extremely shallow center field, almost positioned as a fifth infielder. He was so fast that he was able to track down most balls hit over his head. He still holds the all-time MLB record for assists and double plays by an outfielder, and the MLB record for most assists (449) and double plays by a center fielder (143). The government postcard measures 3x5". Speaker signed the postcard in neat, big and bold blue ink. The postcard was sent to a person at an address in Braintree, Mass. The postcard has a Cleveland postmark dated August 21(?), 1952. An unknown hand printed, "Tris Speaker D 12-8-58/Tris" in blue ink on the address side of the postcard. The signature side of the postcard has some expected light foxing and slight darkening, but neither affects the quality of the autograph. The encapsulated autograph of Speaker, one of baseball's all-time superstars, is especially valued because of its Beckett AUTO GRADE of MINT 9.
