"These are the saddest of possible words: 'Tinker to Evers to Chance,'" is the opening line to an iconic poem about baseball's most famous double play combination: shortstop Joe Tinker to second baseman Johnny Evers to first baseman Frank Chance, all Hall of Famers. Presented is the opportunity to possess a Joe Tinker BGS MINT 5 cut signature. Tinker played 15 Major League seasons: Chicago Cubs (1912-20 & 1916), Cincinnati Reds (1913), Chicago Whales (1914-15). Although Tinker was not an outstanding hitter (.262 lifetime, with 31 home runs), he was a superb fielder, with great hands and fine speed. The combination of Tinker, Evers, and Chance played together on the Cubs from 1902-12, and in that time the Cubs won four pennants and two World Series. Tinker led NL shortstops in fielding percentage 4-times, in assists 3-times, and in putouts 2-times. In the all-time ranking of defensive Wins Above Replacement (WAR), Tinker's WAR of 34.3 ranks fifth, behind only such greats as Ozzie Smith, Mark Belanger, Brooks Robinson, and Cal Ripken Jr. Tinker's signature is on a cut piece of paper or light card stock measuring approx. 2x3.5". Tinker neatly signed with black fountain pen ink, and he added the inscription "Cubs" also in black fountain ink. The cut signature has been encapsulated and BGS graded "MINT 9."
