Harry Heilmann, Hall of Fame right fielder, was a tremendous hitter who played primarily with the Detroit Tigers and won four AL batting crowns. Presented is a Harry Heilmann signed and inscribed government postcard. Heilmann, nicknamed "Slug" for his pronounced lack of speed on the basepaths, was an amazing line-drive hitter with occasional power. His hometown was San Francisco, California, where he played in the minor leagues and won a Pacific Coast League batting title early in his professional career. In the 1920s he won his AL batting crowns with averages in the stratosphere: 1921 (.394), 1923 (.403), 1925 (.393), 1927 (.398). If he had any speed at all, he probably would have easily hit well over .400 in each of his batting crown years. Heilmann was very popular with Tigers fans, and this continued when he became a long-time Detroit Tigers radio broadcaster. The offered government postcard measures 3.25x5.5". It was postmarked in Detroit, but the marking for the year it was mailed is not legible. The postcard is addressed, by an unknown hand, to a person in San Francisco, Calif. On the blank side of the postcard, Heilmann inscribed and signed the card in blue fountain ink. Heilmann wrote, "Hello - Home-Town [sic]" and he signed "Harry Heilmann." Both the inscription and signature are neatly scripted. The postcard shows some light foxing and some minor darkening, both the inscription and autograph are not impacted. The inscription to someone in his hometown makes his postcard something special and adds a personal charm to the signature. The postcard has been encapsulated and has a PSA/DNA CERTIFIED AUTO GRADE of "NM-MT 8."
