Presented is a fascinating item: Ty Cobb's cut signature on his selection for "Baseball's Greatest Outfielder of All-Time." It appears that an unknown person was seeking autographs in an autograph book. On a piece of paper or card stock measuring approx. 3.5x4.25", written above a pair of lines, is "BASEBALL'S GREATEST OUTFIELDER of ALL-TIME." It appears that the unnamed party asked Cobb to sign his name on the page on which the autograph seeker had written the above statement. What's fascinating in this apparent tale is that Cobb complied with the request in a very modest way. Instead of signing his own name, Cobb wrote: "Jackson, Speaker [/] Ruth." Below the above, Cobb wrote, "Ty Cobbs [sic] Selection /4/6/54." Cobb declining to name himself and then naming three other star outfielders tells a story in itself. Of course, Hall of Famer Ruth would be an expected pick by any knowledgeable selector in almost any group of the three best outfielders of all time. Hall of Famer Speaker was the greatest defensive center fielder of vintage baseball. Joe Jackson was a superstar, no question. At the peak of his career, Jackson was banned for life because of his associating with gamblers when fixing the 1919 World Series was discussed. He then became infamous as one of the eight "Black Sox," yet Cobb still selected him. The back of the offered paper or card stock reads, "BASEBALL'S GREATEST MANAGER OF ALL TIME/PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS 1901-1950." The offered card exhibits some foxing and darkening, but it is in otherwise fine condition. The cut signature has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA CERTIFIED as "AUTHENTIC AUTO."
