In 1949, Ty Cobb was living in Menlo, California, and the Inaugural Hall of Famer's investments in Coca-Cola and General Motors stocks had made him extremely wealthy. He still held the MLB all-time hit record (4,189) and steal mark (897). Then, and now, he had the Major Leagues' highest lifetime batting average (.366). Presented is a 1949 Ty Cobb signed government postcard. The 3.25x5" card has two postmarks: On the verso, where the Cobb autograph appears, is a postmark reading, "MENLO PARK/CALIF/1949/MAR 11/11 - AM." The other side of the postcard, with a name and address from Long Beach, California, also has a postmark, reading, "ROYSTON MAR 17" and the rest of the postmark is not legible. Royston, Georgia, is where Cobb grew up. The double postmarks are something of a mystery. Perhaps they indicate that the postcard was forwarded from Menlo Park, California to Royston, Georgia, or that in some way the postcard was removed after the initial postmark and taken to Georgia, where it was mailed again. Cobb signed the verso with his trademark green fountain ink. In big and bold, neat script, he signed and inscribed, "Ty Cobb/ 3/16/17." This Cobb signature is now 75 years old, and the postcard has some expected slight darkening/foxing. The verso has a small piece of clear tape that covers the "Tail" after Cobb's dating of his signature. Otherwise, the postcard is in nice condition. The offering has been encapsulated and a PSA/DNA CERTIFIED AUTO GRADE of "MINT 9."
