Pete Pihos was a Pro Football Hall of Fame end with the Philadelphia Eagles. Presented is a circa 1940s Pihos 8.1x10" black & white production proof photo that was used for his 1948-52 W468 Exhibit card. Pihos played football for Indiana University in a college career interrupted by U.S. Army service as a second lieutenant during World War II, where he served under General George Patton and was awarded both the Bronze and Silver Stars. Pihos later became an inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. As an Eagle, Pihos was a right end on offense (roughly equivalent to a tight end today) and both a left and right end on defense in one-platoon pro football, and sometimes even after the NFL went to two-platoon football. He was a 2-time NFL champion, a 6-time Pro Bowl selection, and he led the NFL in receiving from 1953-55, and finished his pro career with 373 receptions for 5,619 yards and 61 touchdowns. The offered photo has a posed "action" shot of Pihos and a facsimile autograph. The back has "Pete Pihos, end, Chicago" written in pencil by an unknown hand. Pihos had lived in Chicago and played high school football there, but he never played pro football for any Chicago team. Also, written in pencil on the verso is "Phila. Eagles" and "Pete Pihos," and a stamped "84976" plus editing instructions for the photo. The production proof photo was encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The photo has some gray discoloration at the top margin, but it is otherwise in EXCELLENT condition.
