Chuck Bednarik, Pro Football Hall of Fame center and linebacker, is the last of the NFL's true two-way players. Presented is a circa 1940s Bednarik production proof photograph used for his 1948-52 W468 Exhibit card (PSA Type III). Bednarik, nicknamed "Concrete Charlie" because as a pro player he worked part-time as a concrete salesman, played 14 NFL seasons, all with the Philadelphia Eagles (1949-62). Bednarik played his college football at Penn, after service in World War II as an Army Air Corps waist gunner in a B-24. At Penn, he was a Heisman Trophy contender and was later voted into the College Football Hall of Fame. When Bednarik entered the NFL, one-platoon football was about to be phased out. By the very early 1950s, the NFL was a two-platoon league. But near the end of the 1960 regular season, the Eagles began to use Bednarik both ways, as a center and linebacker. On the 1960 NFL Championship game, won by Philadelphia over the Green Bay Packers, Bednarik played an amazing 58 minutes. Bednarik was voted onto the NFL's 50th Anniversary Team as a center and to the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team as a linebacker. He was a 2-time NFL Champion. The offered photo measures 8.1x9.9". This includes generous margins, and the actual photo part of the offering measures 4.75x7.75". Bednarik is shown as a center. The front has editing marks in pencil, and it appears that several of these editing marks were covered over, in more recent times, in White Out. Aside from the aforementioned minor imperfections, the photo is in EXCELLENT condition. The back shows "04038," editing instructions, and a copy negative stamp from the Ken Schmid Studio.
