Sid Luckman was a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who revolutionized professional football by using a then- modern version of the T-formation to lead the Chicago Bears to four NFL Championships in six years (1940, '41, '43, '46). Offered is a circa 1940s Sid Luckman production proof Type I photo that was used for his 1948-49 W469 Exhibit card. Luckman was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1916, and his father often took Sid to see Benny Friedman, a tailback for the New York Football Giants who, like the Luckmans, had a Russian-Jewish background, play at the Polo Grounds. After one game, Friedman showed Sid how to grip a football for passing, and Friedman became Sid's favorite player. Benny played football at Columbia University and then for the Chicago Bears (1939-50). At his retirement, Luckman held the record for NFL touchdown passes (137) and was second in NFL career passing yardage (14,686). Luckman was the star of the 1940 Bears championship team that annihilated the Washington Redskins by an incredible 73-0 score in the NFL Championship Game. Luckman was so highly regarded by George Halas, long-time Bears owner and coach, that "Papa Bear" called Luckman "the best quarterback in history." The offered photo measures 8.2x10". It has a facsimile autograph. There are a few minor imperfections: A fold or scratch mark on the lower left, a small fold on the upper right, and a few, small scratch marks. On back, written in pencil by an unknown hand and mostly obscured by an attached editing slip, is apparently "Sid Luckman/Chicago Bears," and a visible, stamped "84976." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
