Presented is a 1912 Carlisle Indians' football team photograph that includes Jim Thorpe, considered by many to be the best American athlete of all time. Officially called the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, the institution fielded football teams, officially recognized by the NCAA, from 1893-1917. The tiny school was located in the small city of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, yet became a national football power in the early 1900s. Thorpe was a left halfback, a defensive back, a drop-kicker, placekicker, and punter. Thorpe, a Native American, played football for Carlisle from 1907-08 and again from 1911-12. Carlisle was coached at that time by legendary College Football Hall of Fame coach Pop Warner. In 1911, the team went 11-1, and the 1912 squad was 12-1-1, winning the National Championship. Records from the 1912 season do not include two games and some sources differ, but NCAA researcher Steve Boda credits Thorpe with 27 touchdowns and an incredible 224 points during the 1912 season. In the 1912 Summer Olympics, held in Stockholm, Sweden, Thorpe, a track and field star at Carlisle, won a gold medal in both the classic pentathlon and in the decathlon. Later, the medal recognition was taken from Thorpe because he had played two seasons of minor league baseball during the summer vacations from Carlisle. In 2022, full Olympic recognition of Thrope's gold medals was posthumously restored.  Thorpe, an outfielder, also played in the Major Leagues for six seasons: New York Giants (1913-15, '17, & '18-19), Boston Braves (1919). Thorpe batted a career .252. His final Major League season was his best, as he hit .324 in 60 games for the Braves in '19. Thorpe is in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. The 8x9.9" black & white photo has been encapsulated. The photo has been certified by PSA as Type II AUTHENTIC, as it is from the original negative but printed around 20 years later, circa 1930. However, the PSA certification label lists the photo as "circa 1910" but the photo is definitely a 1912 photo of that season's National Champions. The PSA Thorpe is in the middle of the first seated row. The image is in fantastic condition, with great crispness and clarity.
