"Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction, and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley, and Layden," wrote Grantland Rice of the New York Herald Tribune in the most renowned sports lede of all time. Rice was referencing Notre Dame's historic 13-7 upset of Army at New York City's Polo Grounds on Oct. 18, 1924. With the 100th anniversary of that legendary game fast approaching, what could be more apropos than an offering of a circa 1924, Type I photo of the immortal Four Horseman, placed just behind their line, the Seven Mules? Thus, the offered photo of the 1924 Fighting Irish backfield of Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, Jim Crowley, and Elmer Layden, in very good condition, is a wonderful opportunity for any football fan to have a tangible connection to these storied legends. Along with the Hour Horsemen photo, the offering includes a terrific bonus: A 64-page illustrated booklet called Official Football Review/University of Notre Dame. The 7.9x10.9" booklet has a gorgeous multi-colored cover and a great collection of photos, statistics, articles, etc., that review in great detail the 1924 season for the Fighting Irish and presage the upcoming 1925 campaign. The detailed nature of the booklet shows that even without the benefit of the computer, a compendious and fascinating football review was available a century ago. The booklet shows some use: some slight darkening, a few folds, and some insignificant, small stains. Overall, especially considering its 100-year age, the booklet is in wonderful condition. It contains a plethora of information on the 1924 Notre Dame National Championship season, the Four Horseman, coach Knute Rockne, legend George Gipp, etc. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. The pairing of the Four Horsemen photo and the 1924 Notre Dame Football Review make a marvelous two-in-one vintage offering that will please any football fan.
