New York Yankees home jersey worn by first baseman Don Mattingly in 1987. The white knit pinstripe jersey features the Yankees' "NY" logo on the left breast and the number "23" on the reverse. Both the logo and number are applied in navy tackle twill. A white strip tag in the collar bears the player's name, year, and set number ("Mattingly 87 1") chain-stitched in black. Located on the left front tail is a "Wilson" label and adjacent "42" size tag. Mattingly has inscribed the jersey "Don Mattingly #23" in blue marker (grading 6/10) on the front, directly below the logo. The jersey is original as issued and displays light-to-moderate wear, including a few small stains on the rear tail and right sleeve. 1987 marked another banner season for the Yankees' perennial All Star first baseman. Mattingly led the club in both batting average (.320) and RBI (115), while also totaling 30 home runs. One of the best all-around players in baseball for much of the 1980s, Mattingly's achievements include one batting title, one MVP Award, nine Gold Glove Awards, and six All-Star Game appearances. Unfortunately, his Hall of Fame resume was cut short due to chronic back issues. Despite playing in constant pain his final years, he still managed to amass 222 home runs and 1,099 RBI over the course of his fourteen-year career, and he finished with a .307 lifetime average. In 1997, two years after his retirement, the Yankees honored their former captain by permanently retiring his number "23." Full LOA from PSA (for the signature only).
