Presented is an incredibly rare 1954 original photo of the amazing Milan High School Indians, the decided underdogs who won that year's Indiana Boys Basketball Tournament and inspired the 1986 hit movie Hoosiers. The photo shows the Milan team posing after their Indiana State Championship win. Milan High School in 1954 had an enrollment of only 161 students. The Indiana State Basketball Tournament was single class, meaning that all high schools, no matter their enrollment, competed in a single tournament with only one winner. The 1953-54 Milan team remains the smallest single class school to ever win the Boys' State Basketball Tournament in Indiana. Milan was coached by Marvin Wood, a former Butler University star only 24 years old when he was hired for the 1952-53 season. Wood instituted a possession offense, similar to the "Four-Corners" offense later used by North Carolina University. As in the movie, when Wood barred outsiders from practice, the local basketball-crazed fans were angry. In Hoosiers, Gene Hackman played the fictional coach, Norman Dale, based on legendary Indiana University coach Bobby Knight. Actor Dennis Hopper played "Shooter," the father of a player and a man struggling to combat alcoholism. Hopper received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal. Jerry Goldsmith, the composer of the music for Hoosiers, also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Score. In the 1953-54 season, Milan had a 19-2 regular season record and a 27-2 overall slate. In the State Championship game, the score was 30-30 in the 4th quarter, and Coach Wood signaled for a freeze. Star guard Bobby Plump held the ball for an unbelievable 4 minutes and 13 seconds before hitting a buzzer-beating jump shot as time expired. This very rare, 3.5x5" black & white photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. "State Champs" is written in blue ink on the bottom border by an unknown hand. The photo shows Coach Wood (bottom row on the right), Bobby Plump, and all the other players from this legendary squad. The photo is in very nice condition.
