Presented is a twice-signed and inscribed vintage Red Holzman photo as a player with the NBA's Rochester Royals. Holzman was born on the Lower East Side of the Borough of Manhattan in New York City in 1920. He attended Baltimore University and CCNY, and he played basketball while in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He began professional play with the NBL's Rochester Royals and stayed with the team when it moved into the NBA. A 5'10"guard, Holzman twice made the All-League First Team with Rochester. Overall, he played six professional seasons, finishing his playing career as a player-coach with the Milwaukee Hawks. He achieved lasting fame as the head coach of the New York Knicks, coaching them from 1967-77 and again from 1978-82. He was the coach of the 1970 and 1973 NBA Champions, with NBA greats such as Willis Reed, Jerry Lucas, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Bill Bradley, and Dave DeBusschere playing on one or both of these championship squads. Holzman stressed fundamentals and team play, and two of his famous coaching axioms were: "See the ball" and "Hit the open man." Holzman was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Holtzman inscribed and signed the photo, neatly scripted in blue ink, as "Best Wishes 'Red' Holzman." The lower inscription and signature were penned over a mostly dark area of the photo, so his writing there is legible but difficult to read against the dark background. Thus, it seems that Holzman signed and inscribed the photo a second time, mostly over the white area of his uniform, and his writing is easily seen there. The photo exhibits pinholes in each corner, some minor darkening, and some slight folds. Otherwise, the photo is in nice condition. The offering comes with a PSA/DNA LOA for both signatures - Certification Number: AO07123.
