Original film negative capturing the batting grip of Lou Gehrig, taken by noted Chicago baseball photographer George Burke. Closeup hand studies of batting and pitching grips were not the norm for Burke, making this both an exceedingly rare and interesting Gehrig image dating from the early 1930s. The name "Gehrig" is written in pencil near the top border. Positive attribution to Burke can be made due to the inventory number ("268-A5") printed along the bottom border (this inventory number sequence was typical for Burke and can be seen on many of his negatives and finished photos). The number "22" is also written in the lower right corner. Since Burke was based in Chicago, which hosted two Major League clubs, he had access to all the Major League players during his long career. Gehrig was a frequent subject for Burke, however, we cannot recall having seen a Type I photo made from this negative. The negative (5x7") remains in Very Good to Excellent condition. Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
