Displayed are two horse whips, one used by jockey Jerry Bailey and the other by jockey Mike Smith. Bailey became a jockey, he said, "for the competition." He won 5,894 races in his career, including six wins in American Classic races: Two wins each at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont. His favorite horse was Cigar, who won an amazing 16 races in a row. After Cigar was retired to stud, Bailey visited him regularly in Lexington, Kentucky, until Cigar passed away. Bailey was known to be an astute analyst of all the horses and jockeys in an upcoming race, and he later became a television racing analyst. He is an inductee into the United States Racing Hall of Fame. The offered Bailey whip is black and 31.25" long. On the knob end is a small piece of tape with "Jerry Bailey" printed in black marker by an unknown hand. At the midpoint of the whip is J.B. in white, printed by an unknown hand. Mike Smith has won more Breeders Cup races than any other jockey. In 2018, Smith rode Justify to the Triple Crown, the oldest jockey, at age 52, to have ever accomplished that feat. Mike Smith is also in the United States Racing Hall of Fame. The Mike Smith whip is 31" long. It has a black grip, red and brown coloring in the middle, and mostly brown whip end. Some black tape between the grip and the midsection is partially loose. Smith's whip shows incredible use from multiple races. The whips were consigned by the same person who consigned the Mike Smith and Jerry Bailey race worn suits in a previous Classic Auction. The offered race used whips are representative of two of America's best jockeys, and the offerings make great display items.
