Presented is a rare 1940s photo of noted actor Turhan Bey and filmmaker Orson Welles in a Type I production photo from Briskin Smith Productions. Turhan Bey was an American-born actor, born of a Turkish father and a Czech-Jewish mother. Bey's parents had to flee Austria for America when their country was taken over by Hitler's Germany. Welles was a larger-than-life film auteur whose first film, Citizen Kane (1941), was a sensation that was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and Welles, along with co-writer Herman Mankiewicz, shared the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Welles was a writer, director, producer, and actor, and he starred in the film as the title character, a role based on newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Welles was the driving force behind many successful films, including The Magnificent Ambersons. Before becoming a filmmaker, Welles starred in New York theatre and on national radio. He was particularly famous for his radio production of the H.G. Wells' novel War of the Worlds, a show that was so realistic that many listeners believed the United States was really being invaded by Martians who had landed near Princeton, New Jersey. It is unclear when the offered photo was taken. On back is "Turhan Bey" written in pencil by an unknown hand. Welles and Turhan had worked together during World War II in producing a film to support the war effort. The black & white photo measures 7.75x9.5". The photo exhibits some slight toning in the upper right corner and some wear in the lower right corner. Overall, the photo is in very good condition. The item has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC.
