Displayed is a Dr. James Naismith personal notebook with 30 pages of his handwritten notes in pencil. The 3.75x5.25" notebook is originally from the Naismith family collection. The notes mostly concern books, education, and sports, and these notes reflect the varied interests of a true Renaissance man. Naismith has even included the Dewey Decimal System numbers for books in which he was interested. Naismith, the inventor of basketball, was a teacher, coach, chaplain, and physician. As an instructor at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, he invented basketball, using two peach baskets and a soccer ball in the gymnasium there. He wrote the first basketball rule book, and he became the basketball coach at Kansas University. In Springfield, Massachusetts, named in his honor, is the James Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. On one page, Naismith has written his signature. The front and back covers of the notebook exhibit great wear, with small portions of the cover partially worn off at the corners, various folds, and small stains. The pages show some darkening, because of the passage of time, and some of the normal wear and small stains of a notebook that was most likely carried with him in his pocket. His notes remain clearly written. The notebook comes with a PSA LOA for the signature.
