Presented is the chance to possess a wonderfully creative piece of original art, a beautifully drawn cartoon by famed The Daily News cartoonist and writer Bill Gallo that is a terrific tribute to the embryonic New York Mets before the start of their playing existence in 1962. After the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants left New York City for Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively, the Big Apple was bereft of National League baseball. William Shea, an NYC attorney, was spearheading a group to bring baseball back to New York, and after an initial plan to form a new league, the Continental League, an opportunity was presented for a National League expansion franchise, to begin play in 1962. At some point before the Mets began official regular season play, Gallo created this art. Centered around an image of the Polo Grounds - the former home of the New York Giants and the then future home of the Mets - Gallo has drawn images of 20 former New York Giants, including Hall of Fame manager John McGraw. Other New York Giants images: Hall of Famers Frankie Frisch, Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott, Bill Terry, Johnny Mize, and the now recently deceased Willie Mays. Other images include stars such as Bobby Thomson, Sal Maglie, and Alvin Dark. At the bottom of the art are images of baseball executive George Weiss and Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. They had worked together when Weiss was the New York Yankees' general manager and Stengel was the Yankee manager, and now they were working in the same roles with the Mets. The Gallo art also makes reference to the "original" New York Metropolitans (Mets), a Major League team in the 1800s in the American Association. Written in blue pencil by an unknown hand on the poster: "4 Cols x 10"/Deep Benday indicated - Blue Pencil." There is an approx. 2" long tear near the top left, and there are various minor erasures, some small, light stains, and editing markings in a number of places. Overall, the aforementioned imperfections only serve to actually enhance the charm of this real, work of art that was on its way to publication. This art is a great find for any sports fan as it hearkens back to the historic return of National League baseball to New York City.
