Original photograph capturing thirty-seven members of the New York Giants posing together in front of their hotel while training in Marlin, Texas, prior to the start of the season. Included are manager John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Jim Thorpe, Hooks Wiltse, Wilbert Robinson (coach), Chief Meyers, Larry Doyle, Buck Herzog, Heinie Groh, Josh Devore, Fred Merkle, and Jeff Tesreau. Although no year is listed, we have seen a vintage postcard featuring this image in which each of the players was identified in print. Based upon that printed roster, this photo dates to 1913, because that was the only season in which Josh Devore and Jim Thorpe played together with the Giants. 1913 marked Thorpe's rookie season with the Giants and since this is a spring training image it might be the earliest image of Thorpe in a Giants uniform. It is also interesting to note that a number of different uniform styles are seen here. Chief Meyers is wearing the special all-black Giants uniform that was specially produced for use in the 1911 World Series, while several other players are wearing the one-year-only style jersey worn in 1912. The remainder are wearing the style used for several years beginning in 1913. The Giants captured the pennant for the third consecutive year in 1913 but once again lost the World Series, this time to the Philadelphia Athletics (the Giants were defeated, respectively, by the A's and Red Sox in 1911 and 1912). The photo (8x6"), which displays exceptional clarity, is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. It has been affixed to cardboard mount (9x7.5"; visible dimensions) that has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 14.5x13".
