Spectacular wall display featuring individual photos of thirteen members of the 1902 Manchester Base Ball Club, Champions of the New England League (Class B minor-league circuit). Each formal studio photograph captures the respective player in uniform, except for player/manager John "Phenomenal" Smith, who is pictured in the center. An affixed label below each photo lists the player's last name and position. Both the year (1902) and the team name (Manchesters) is ornately printed on hand drawn banners in the center. Additional hand-drawn graphics on the matting include two nearly identical "crossed bat and ball motifs" and illustrations of baseballs. We should note that this is one of the most attractive turn-of-the-century photographic team displays we have ever seen, which is more akin to a work of art than a baseball piece. Given the hand-drawn graphics and the size of the piece, this is almost certainly a unique piece and most likely was displayed in the team's executive office or clubhouse.

Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, the "Manchesters" boasted a star-studded lineup in 1902, including eight players who at one time played in the Major Leagues, all of whom are pictured here: John "Phenomenal" Smith (led the team in batting average with a .369 mark), Win Clark (team captain), Henry Cote, Frank Morrissey (led the team with 27 wins), Jim Murray (led the team in home runs with 12), Ed "Pinky" Swander, Jake Volz, and Jesse Whiting. The remaining five players pictured here are Harry Nevers, Louis Rapp, Louis Knau, Wilkie Clark, and William Kane.

A few of the photos display very light foxing, otherwise all are in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. There is evidence of very light water staining along the base of the matting (33.75x29"; visible dimensions) which does not detract in the least from its overall Near Mint appearance. Housed in what appears to be its original wood frame that measures 40x35". Please Note: The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
