Offered is a full ticket from the "George Brett Pine Tar Game" played between the visiting Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, July 24, 1983. In that notorious contest, the Royals were trailing the Yankees 4-3, in the top of the 9th inning, with two out and a man on base. Yankee Hall of Fame closer Goose Gossage needed only one more out to get the New Yorkers the win. Brett, however, hit a pitch into the stands to give Kansas City a 5-4 lead. However, Yankee Hall of Fame manager Billy Martin protested that Brett had illegal pine tar on his bat. Baseball rules at the time stated that pine tar could not extend more than 18 inches from the knob. The game's umpire used home plate, with a 17" horizontal measurement, as a guide and saw that the pine tar on Hall of Famer Brett's bat exceeded 18". At the ruling, Brett charged the home plate umpire Tim McClelland like an enraged bull, but he was held back. Days later, American League President Lee MacPhail ruled that Martin's protest violated the "spirit of the rule," which was designed to prevent bats from getting discolored, and that the pine tar Brett used would not give him an unfair advantage. The game was ordered replayed, with Brett's home run counting. On August 25th, the game was replayed from Brett's home run before a crowd of only 1,200 persons. As a way to express his view of the MacPhail ruling, Billy Martin bizarrely placed pitcher Ron Guidry in center field and moved left-handed throwing Don Mattingly from first base to second base. Kansas City hung on to win the game 5-4. The offered full ticket measures 1.5x6". It reads, in part, "New York Yankees/Yankee Stadium/DAY 52/SUN. JULY 24, 1983/LOGE BOX $9.00." The ticket exhibits some fading, but it is in otherwise excellent condition. The full ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded FULL VG 3(MK). The ticket makes a great remembrance of one of baseball's most infamous games.
