Displayed is a Babe Ruth signed 1944 program for the NBC radio show called the Spalding Sports Show. Not only does the offering have a classic Babe Ruth autograph, but the program itself is chock full of sporting cartoons and illustrations that present fascinating facts about the many sports for which Spalding produced equipment. Ruth always seemed larger than life. After becoming a star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, the Inaugural Hall of Famer started to transition into becoming an outfielder, and in some years as a New York Yankee, he hit more home runs by himself than did a number of entire American League teams. Ruth was also a marvelous showman, and his charisma was evident on-and-off the field. Put him in front of a camera or a radio microphone and Ruth was just as magnetic as he was in person. The program measures 7x10", and it has 16 pages, including the covers. The program features anecdotes and historical factoids about baseball, football, basketball, tennis, and golf - all sports in which the Spalding Company was at the forefront in producing the first balls and other sporting equipment. Ruth signed the cover of the program in blue ink from a fountain pen. As usual, Ruth's signature displays his beautiful penmanship. At one point, the program was folded and probably mailed, since an unknown hand has written a mailing address, and the fold is still apparent. The item exhibits a few stains, some paper loss in various areas, some small tears, and some partial tearing on the first page at the spine. Despite the foregoing imperfections, the program is in reasonable condition, especially in considering its 80-year-old age. The offering comes with a JSA Authentication for the signature.
