Pair of rare porcelain plates, produced by German manufacturer Villeroy & Boch, each depicting a different positional baseball player: "Batsman" and "Catcher." These decorative plates, dating from the circa 1880s, have always been highly prized by collectors and are part of a set that included a large pitcher, cups, and two different size plates. It should be noted that while all Villeroy & Boch porcelain pieces from the baseball set are scarce, the offered "Catcher" plate is especially so and is the first example we have ever offered. Each plate, which represents the smaller variety produced by the company, measures 8.75" in diameter and features the Villeroy & Boch stamp on the reverse. Both display light crazing and are otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition.
