Unprecedented offering of eleven nineteenth-century baseball candy-container dolls. This is the largest collection of these dolls at auction that we have ever seen and their rarity is such that prior to their discovery we had not seen more than five others at auction in the past twenty-five years. All originate from a recent find and come with a unique provenance. These dolls belonged to our consignor's great-grandfather in the late 1880s, who later gave them to his son (our consignor's grandfather). Our consignor's great-grandfather ran a grocery store, and he most likely sold them at his establishment. Naturally, he gave some to his children, and years later, our consignor's grandfather featured the dolls he had collected as a child in a window display at his hardware store. The offered dolls represent all the surviving examples from that display and have been passed down to the current generation. As such all are new to the hobby. (A pristine example, featured as Lot 1018 in Lelands 2023 Fall Classic, was part of this remarkable find.) What makes these dolls unique is that they also served as a candy container. The dolls, which are approximately ten inches in height, are made of hard composition and all the exposed areas are hand painted, including the hat. The doll is dressed in a cloth baseball uniform of the day, featuring both a tie and belt. The doll disengages into two separate pieces at the waist, with a cardboard cylinder in the center serving as the home to the candy (long since eaten). The cloth uniforms displays normal wear commensurate with their age and former use. All the dolls display varying flaws. Six of the dolls are missing a hand, while nine display missing portions of one or more feet. Six feature chips/cracks to the face, and six are accompanied by what we believe to be their original wood bats. It should be noted that such defects are common to these fragile dolls and most present extremely well. This is a once-in-a-lifetime offering to acquire what is certainly the largest candy-container doll collection in the world.
