Based on Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather, the film was co-written by both Puzo and producer-director Francis Ford Coppola. The Godfather Part II received 11 Academy Award nominations and won six Academy Awards. DeNiro won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. DeNiro grew up in New York City and was interested in acting from a young age. In addition to his Oscar from The Godfather Part II, DeNiro won a second Oscar, this time as Best Actor, for his work portraying boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.
