Displayed is a 1958 terrific, original signed and inscribed Type I photo of the great Ted Williams, in profile, eyes squinting as he focuses his attention on the baseball diamond in a ballpark during spring training with the Red Sox in Florida. It's a wonderful photo. Hall of Famer Williams played his entire career with the Red Sox,0 from 1939-42 & 1946-60. He missed 1943-45 when he was a U.S. Marine pilot in World War II. After being recalled to the Marines as a pilot during the Korean Conflict, Williams missed all but 43 games during the 1952-53 seasons. Thus, he missed nearly five full seasons because of military service, yet managed to hit 521 home runs. He was a 6-time AL batting crown recipient, a 2-time AL MVP, 2-time Triple Crown winner, a 19-time All-Star, a lifetime .344 hitter, and the last Major Leaguer to hit .400 when he batted .406 in '41. After this photo was taken in spring training of '58, Williams went on to have another fine season: He led the AL in batting average (.328), OBP (.468), and OPS (1.042). The offered silver gelatin double-weight original photo measures approx. 8x10". Writing in blue ink from a fountain pen, Williams employed beautiful penmanship as he endorsed and signed the photo. Williams wrote, To Van Dorn Catoe, Ted Williams. Van Dorn Catoe was the former mayor of Webb, Mississippi, and apparently was the owner, or had some connection to the Catoe Studio in Webb, Mississippi. The Catoe Photo (Studio) stamp is on the reverse, and within the stamp is "1958" hand-printed in blue ink by an unknown hand. The reverse also shows "Please autograph to Van Dorn Catoe" written in blue ink by an unknown hand. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. Williams was known for his fantastic eyesight, better than 20/20 vision, eyes that not only helped him have the highest on base percentage (.482) in history, but that helped him in combat as a pilot. In the photo, like the movie cowboy hero gunslinger about to draw against the villain, Williams stares ahead, and the image even shows the crows feet flaring from the 39-year-old Williams' eyes as he uses his laser vision, probably to focus on a pitcher he will soon face. The photo is in fine condition, and it's a gorgeous, never-before-seen image.
