Presented is a circa 1940s original Ted Williams Type I photo. Hall of Famer Williams was the last Major Leaguer to bat .400, as he batted .406 in 1941. The amazing Williams was a John Wayne-like character who did everything big. When he was hitting a shade under .400 and had an end-of-the-season double-header on the next day, meaningless games in the standings, Williams could have sat out the games and have been considered a .400 hitter as his batting average would have been rounded off to .400. Williams would have nothing of it, saying: "I don't care to be known as a .400 hitter with a lousy average of .39955. If I'm going to be a .400 hitter, I want to have more than my toenails on the line." Williams then went out and reached .400 his way, with six hits in eight at bats. Williams won six AL batting titles, hitting .344 lifetime, and despite missing the equivalent of nearly five seasons while in wartime military service as a Marine pilot, Williams still managed to hit 521 home runs. The photo is a great shot of Williams, smiling, with his cap off, showing the curly hair of his youth. In the photo, Williams is posed next to an unidentified Red Sox player. Perhaps it was prior to an intrasquad game as Williams is wearing a visitors' uniform, and the other player has on a Red Sox home jersey.
