"I was a blue collar catcher," said Rick Dempsey in summing up his 24-year Major League career, most memorably with 12 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Displayed is a 1992 Rick Dempsey Baltimore Orioles' jersey that was game worn by the fiery defensive bulwark during his final season with the Orioles, and also his final campaign as a player. Dempsey played for Baltimore (1976-86 & 1992), as well as five other teams, but he is most known for his time as an Oriole. His forte was defense. Longtime Baltimore manager Earl Weaver said of Dempsey's arm, "I've never seen anyone throw better." Although he only hit .233 lifetime, with merely 96 home runs (an average of four per season), Demsey played Major League baseball until he was 42 years old because of his overall catching skills. He was a 2-time World Series champion, and when Baltimore defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1983 World Series, Dempsey hit .385 in the five-game Series, had a .923 slugging average, and was named as the 1983 World Series MVP. Dempsey always played all out. "I might dive into the grandstand or dive into the dugout," he said. "I never played it safe." Dempsey never played it safe with Earl Weaver, either. One time, in a dispute over Weaver taking Dempsey out of an Orioles' game, Rick and Weaver threw shin guards and a chest protector back-and-forth at each other in the Orioles' dugout, and another time Dempsey threw Weaver down the dugout stairs in another dispute. But the mercurial Dempsey didn't stay angry long. He became a fan favorite for entertaining fans during rain delays. He would stuff towels under his shirt to make a big belly and imitate Babe Ruth. Dempsey would stand at home plate a whack an imaginary baseball into the outfield and do a belly flop, sliding on rainwater into a base or home plate as the fans cheered. The offered away jersey is a gray with orange and black trim. Across the chest is "Orioles" in sewn-on black script with orange trim. Under the team's name is 24 in black sewn-n numerals with orange trim. Six buttons run down the front. On the lower, left tail are four tags: 1) Russell Athletic manufacturer's; 2) Diamond Collection, showing size "44"; 3) "92-2", indicating 1992, Series 2; 4) "100% polyester." On the back is "DEMPSEY" sewn on a gray nameplate in black letters with orange trim. Under the nameplate is 24 in sewn-on black numerals with orange trim. The jersey shows use, with loose threads in a number of areas, but overall, the jersey is in very nice condition.
