John "Rocky" Coppinger had a promising beginning to his Major League career as he went 10-6 as a starting rookie pitcher in 125.0 innings with the Baltimore Orioles in 1996 and finished in 4th place in that season's race for the American League Rookie of the Year. But in the 1997 campaign, he suffered an elbow injury and pitched only 20 innings, going 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA. Displayed is a 1997 Rocky Coppinger Baltimore Orioles game-used jersey. Overall, Coppinger, a big pitcher at 6'5" and 245 lbs., played for Baltimore in four seasons (1996-99) and for two seasons with the National League's Milwaukee Brewers (1999 & 2001). He had a Major League lifetime record of 17-11, with a 5.47 ERA, used mostly as a reliever after his elbow woes. In his injury-shortened career, Coppinger was most noted for allowing Mark McGwire's 583rd, and final, home run, on Oct. 4, 2001. The home white, 100% polyester jersey has Orioles across the chest in black sewn-on script with orange trim. The right sleeve has a Jackie Robinson 50th Anniversary patch and a Russell Athletic logo. The left sleeve sports an Orioles logo and a Baltimore 200th Anniversary patch. Six silver buttons run down the front. Across the back is COPPINGER sewn on a white nameplate, in black letters with orange trim. Also, on the back is 27 in sewn-on black numerals with orange trim. On the left outside tail are five tags: A Russell Athletic manufacturer's tag; A Diamond Collection tag showing 52 for size; a 1997 tag; tags showing 100% polyester, and 2" Extra Body length. The jersey exhibits fine use, with a number of small dirt stains on both the front and back. Overall, the jersey is in excellent condition.
