Presented is a circa mid-1970s Johnny Oates' game used catcher's mitt. This was game worn at some time during the 1973-75 seasons, when Oates wore #15 and played for the Atlanta Braves. Oates was an excellent defensive catcher who played in 1970 and from 1972-81 in the Major Leagues. In his 11 Major League seasons, Oates played for the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees. For most of his career, Oates, a left-handed batter, either platooned or was a reserve player. He hit a lifetime .250, with 14 home runs. While with Atlanta for two-and-a-half seasons, Oates batted .236, with five home runs and 48 RBIs. He was with two pennant-winning teams and appeared in two World Series. After his playing career, he managed the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers and was the AL Manager of the Year with Texas in 1996. The offered catcher's mitt is a Rawlings mitt "For the professional player." It has "Heart of the Hide" leather. On the back is a Rawlings manufacturer's tag. The thumb slot back reads, "Nu-Grip - Streamlined." On the back of the webbing is "15" written in black marker by an unknown hand. On the back of the pinkie finger, "15 Oates" is written in black marker by an unknown hand. The game-used mitt shows nice wear, with a few scuffs and some darkening in the pocket, and it is in very good condition.
