On June 19, 1936, heavyweight contender Joe Louis (24-0), the "Brown Bomber," faced off against former heavyweight champion Max Schmeling of Germany (48-7-4) in a well-publicized boxing match held at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York. What was expected to be just a tuneup bout for the undefeated Louis turned out to be a 12th round knockout instead for Schmeling. This lot offers a full ticket proof commemorating the '36 meeting of the two accomplished heavyweights, which was originally scheduled to take place the day before (June 18) but was postponed due to rain. The ticket measures 7.25" wide by 2.75" high, has "SPECIMEN" stamped diagonally across the front in red, and includes five ticket punch holes. The ticket proof has been authenticated by PSA and is nicely encapsulated inside a ticket holder that measures 9.5" wide by 4.5" tall. Almost two years to the date (June 22, 1938), Louis – who was then the reigning Heavyweight Champion at the time – avenged his earlier loss to Schmeling by knocking him out in Round 1 of their second meeting, which was also held at Yankee Stadium. Louis would go on to fight 13 more years in the professional ranks and finish his career with a record of 66-3 with 52 knockouts to his credit. His final bout (Oct. 26, 1951) came against the great Rocky Marciano, who knocked Louis out in the eighth round. Marciano was 28 at the time, while Louis was 37 years old.
