On April 11, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his “unofficial” MLB debut in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform by starting at first base in an exhibition game at Ebbets Field against the New York Yankees. It marked the first time in history that a black player took the field for a Major League Baseball team. In what turned out to be a 14-6 shellacking of the visiting Bronx Bombers, Robinson went hitless in four trips to the plate but still drove in three runs. In the field, Robinson handled 15 putouts at first. This lot features a Brooklyn Dodgers Ebbets Field program and scorecard from that very game. The program cover reads “1946” but that’s just because the Dodgers reused the previous year's program for the exhibition game of Robinson’s debut since it was prior to the start of the ‘47 season. Despite its age, the program remains in great condition and the two-page scorecard in the center spread has been filled out in pencil with all the action, as well as updated lineup changes including Robinson’s new assignment at first base. This lot includes original newspaper clippings marking Robinson’s arrival including a newspaper picture showing young Dodger fans leaning over the top of the dugout at Ebbets Field to get autographs from Robinson. The program measures 6.75” wide by 10” high and shows noticeable toning and inside pages. Original price: 10 cents.
