Presented are the two 1957 PSA Type I Charlie Conerly photos used to make the New York Football Giants' quarterback's 1957 Topps card. Conerly was a star tailback at Ole Miss, and after the 1942 season, he joined the United States Marines, and served in the Pacific during World War II, fighting in the Battle of Guam. After the war, Conerly returned to play for Ole Miss, and in 1947, he led the Rebels to the team's first Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship, and that season he led the nation in completions (133) and touchdown passes (18). In the NFL, Conerly played his whole career with the Giants (1948-61). He was a 2-time Pro Bowler and quarterbacked the Giants to the 1956 NFL Championship. In '58, Conerly was the Giants' quarterback in the NFL Championship Game, a contest won by the Baltimore Colts in sudden death overtime, and often called "The Greatest Game Ever Played." In his career, Conerly completed 1,418 passes for 19,488 yards and 173 touchdowns, with 167 interceptions. As a Giants quarterback, Conerly was well-known by New York City's Madison Avenue advertising executives, and after his playing career, Conerly, with his rugged looks as an outdoorsman, frequently appeared in print ads for Marlboro Cigarettes as "The Marlboro Man." The lot comes with a Topps Football card. The offering includes two 8x10" black and white photos: 1) An action photo of a helmetless Conerly poised to pass. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA graded Type I AUTHENTIC. 2) A portrait photo depicts Conerly, the shot showing the quarterback's weathered, masculine looks. This portrait photo has been encapsulated and PSA graded Type I AUTHENTIC. Each of the photos has notations and lines, handwritten in blue ink, in the margins for the purpose of using the photos for the Topps Football cards. Overall, the two photos are in excellent condition. Both photos originally came from the Topps' Archives. The close-up photo was also used for Conerly's 1956 Topps #77 card. The offer comes with a 1957 Topps Football #109 card, one that uses both of the offered Type I photos. Conerly is in the College Football Hall of Fame. When New York Giants Hall of Famer Frank Gifford was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he said in his induction speech to Conerly, "Chuck, you belong here, too." Wellington Mara, who was the Giants owner, often said, "Charley is the best player not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
