Extraordinary large-format studio photograph capturing eighteen members of the 1896 Harvard football team. Produced by the famed Elmer Chickering photography studio of Boston, as noted in print in the lower right corner. This is one of the finest early Harvard team photos we have ever handled. The photo, which offers exceptional clarity, pictures each player in uniform, with many wearing their Harvard sweaters. The year, "96," is written on the football held by the player in the center. The photo (16x12"; visible dimensions) is in apparent Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 24x20". Nineteenth-century team football photos of this size and quality, especially those picturing prominent college football teams such as Harvard, are scarce and have always been highly prized by collectors.
