Presented is a 2001 Ralph Houk New York Yankees Oldtimers' Day game worn jersey that the former catcher and manager wore at Yankee Stadium. Known as "The Major," Houk was in the Yankees farm system before he was in the U.S. Marines, serving as a major in World War II and taking part in the Battle of Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. For his military service, Houk received both a Silver Star and a Bronze Star, each with an oak leaf cluster. He also was awarded the Purple Heart. After World Ward II, Houk made it to the Major Leagues, where he spent his entire eight-year career with the Yankees, as a second or third string catcher. Since Yogi Berra was the workhorse first string catcher during Houk's Yankees tenure, Houk only appeared in 91 games in his MLB career, averaging .272 at bat. After his playing career, Houk became a Yankees coach and later the team's manager. Houk won pennants in his first three seasons as a manager, the only skipper to do so since Hughie Jennings. In addition, Houk was the first manager to win the World Series in his first two seasons, 1961-62. Houk managed the Yankees from 1961-63 and again from 1966-73. He also managed the Detroit Tigers (1974-78) and the Boston Red Sox (1981-84). The jersey sources from the Houk Family Collection. The home, pinstriped jersey has an interlocking navy-blue NY on the left chest. On the lower, outside, left tail is Houk's name, embroidered in navy-blue thread. A Rawlings tag in the neck indicates the size as XL. Under the abovementioned tag is a tag that lists the jersey as 100% polyester, and lists washing instructions. The back of the jersey has Houk's number 35, in navy-blue numerals. The game worn Oldtimers' Day jersey comes with a copy of a LOA from Ralph Houk's daughter. The jersey is in excellent condition.
