The World Series Championship of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers was the high point of Brooklyn's National League franchise. Since the franchise's Major League beginning as the Brooklyn Atlantics in the American Association in 1884, the switch to the National League in 1990, and various nicknames, including Dodgers, Grays, Grooms, Bridegrooms, Superbas, and Robins, Brooklyn had been a pennant winner nine times, but had never won a World Series. It felt to Dodger fans that every World Series was lost to the cross-city New York Yankees. This was almost literally true, as Brooklyn lost the 1941, '47, '49, '52, and '53 World Series to the Bronx Bombers. Finally, in Game 7 of the '55 World Series, the Dodgers' Johnny Podres shut-out the Yankees 2-0. Brooklyn, with Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, and Duke Snider, skippered by Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston, had finally defeated the Yankees to become World Champions. The beautiful World Series ring comes from the renowned Sal LaRocca collection, especially noteworthy for its extensive number of Brooklyn Dodger items. The size 11.5 ring has a "Dieges & Clust 14K" stamp on the inside. Around the ring face are raised letters reading, "BROOKLYN WORLD CHAMPIONS."
