Displayed is a 1959 Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Championship ring that was presented to scout Bert Wells. When the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles for the 1958 season, the team went from a '57 record of 84-70 for third place, to a 71-83 record, good for 7th place. The adjustment to playing baseball on the West Coast and playing in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with its ridiculously close left field, at merely 251 feet, with a 42 foot screen in front of it, was a tough adjustment to make. By 1959, the Dodgers had adjusted to the team's new surroundings and the core of the team, still mostly former Brooklyn Dodgers, responded with an 88-68 record for the National League pennant and a 4-2 victory in games over the Chicago White Sox to take the World Series. Former Brooklyn sluggers Gil Hodges and Duke Snider were the Dodgers' main power hitters in '59, with Hodges hitting 25 homers and Snider 23 round trippers. Former Brooklyn pitchers also were the Dodgers top starters: Don Drysdale went 17-13, with a 3.46 ERA, Johnny Podres was 14-9, with a 4.11 ERA, and Sandy Koufax was 8-6, with a 4.05 ERA. The face of the ring shows an image of a baseball diamond, and around the face of the ring is "Los Angeles World Champions." The left prong of the ring has a raised baseball image with "Bert Wells" inscribed. Wells was a Dodger scout from 1939-79, and he signed slugger Frank Howard and Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton. The right prong depicts the Los Angeles City Hall, with a "baseball" in front of it, in downtown Los Angeles - and shows "1959." Also, "Balfour 14K" is stamped inside. The diamond on the face does not test as real. The ring is a size 9. The World Series ring is in excellent condition, and it is a special keepsake since it marks the first World Championship for the Dodgers as a Los Angeles team.
