Four-page handwritten letter (on each side of two separate sheets), undated, signed by Jackie Robinson. In his lengthy letter to good friend Bob Campbell, Robinson laments on the nature of race in sports and voices his displeasure with sportswriter Vince Flahrety. In part: "I have had a fine season and all has been pretty serene the last few months. It started out pretty rough but I can see that what one newspaperman said that 'Jackie Robinson is not as yet just another ballplayer, he must remember he is a negro ballplayer' is very true so I have just gone back into my shell and am again waiting. It is really a shame that it is as it is but things have progressed so much I can wait a few more years for it to really be the All-American game.... Vince Flahrety at the Examiner is a real liar. His column of some time ago was strictly his own and he certainly should check his information." Although the letter is undated, based upon the content it appears to be written in August, 1951. He mentions that his son Jackie Jr. (born November 9, 1946) is in nursery school and his daughter Sharon (born January 13, 1950) takes well to people. He also mentions that with about about 39 games to play the Dodgers should be O.K. He then adds "The Giants have been really going here of late but our lead is big enough that we should protect it." Signed simply "Jackie" in blue ink (grading 8/10). As we all know, the Giants eventually caught the Dodgers in the standings and then won the pennant in a three-game playoff that ended with Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World."
