Cabinet photo signed by William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891), American Civil War Union general. The bust-length image captures Sherman in full military uniform and is both signed and dated in black fountain pen (grading 8/10) along the base: "W. T. Sherman/General/Dec 25, 1884." Sherman retired from the military on February 8, 1884, and was living in New York at the time he signed this cabinet photo, which was obviously presented as a Christmas gift. Sherman is best remembered today for his "scorched earth" policy, which he utilized during his military marches through the South near the close of the Civil War. In 1869, after Ulysses Grant was elected president, Sherman was named the Commanding General of the United States Army. The cabinet photo (4x6.25") has been trimmed along all four borders and displays both light creasing and the possible erasure of a pencil mark in the upper left corner. Despite the condition anomalies, the cabinet retains an Excellent overall appearance. Mounted and framed together with a descriptive plaque. Total dimensions: 14x21.5" Full LOA from PSA. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
