Rare, limited-edition print, issued in commemoration of ESPN's naming of the "100 Greatest Athletes of the Century" in 2000. Created by artist Neal Adams, the colorful artwork features each of the greatest athletes named in ESPN's poll sitting ringside as they watch a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan, who fight it out for the top spot (Ali eventually finished first in the poll). The print is signed by Adams in silver paint pen in the lower right corner, below which he has hand numbered it "1/125."
These limited-edition signed prints were given to select guests at the ESPN dinner naming the 100 Greatest Athletes of the Century, but the offered #1 print was presented to a special individual, as noted on the engraved plaque within the matting that reads "To Dan Somers/In commemoration of the launch of the SportsCentury Series, July 15, 2000./Thanks for your continued Support/ESPN Classic." It should be noted that this print is a take-off on Adams' classic 1978 cover artwork of the special DC comic book "Muhammad Ali vs. Superman," which also featured a celebrity ringside lineup. The complete list of the athletes featured here is provided on a special handout issued by ESPN, which has been affixed to the back of the frame. The print (23.5x14.25"; visible dimensions) is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 31.5x23". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
