The glory that was the Polo Grounds is on full display in this pair of rare original glass-plate negatives that, when combined, offer a panoramic view of the ballpark, circa 1915. What makes this image unique is that instead of being taken from the centerfield bleachers, at a heightened vantage point, it is taken from field level. Here we have the same view as that of Giants centerfielder Fred Snodgrass or later, Willie Mays, as they patrolled the vast acreage where many fly balls went to die in the stadium's furthest expanse. The entire playing field is visible here, as is the main grandstand, which is devoid of fans. This is both a spectacular and haunting image of the stadium that served as home to both the Giants and Yankees during most of the decade. Each plate measures 8.5x6.5".
