Outstanding example of the rarest of all Jackie Robinson pins. Issued by the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper in 1949, the design features a portrait image of Robinson surrounded by text that reads "Jackie Robinson Tells His Story In The Brooklyn Eagle." This is just the third example of this pin we have ever offered and it is believed that fewer than ten have survived. Its scarcity is most likely related to its method of distribution. Unlike nearly all other Robinson pins in the hobby, which were retail issues sold at the stadium, this pin was distributed by the Brooklyn Eagle as a promotional piece. One of the most interesting aspects of this pin is the letter "E" under Robinson's image. The pins were issued with different letters of Jackie Robinson's name, so kids could eventually collect a set that red "Jackie Robinson." Despite that promotional gimmick, this is one of only two examples we have ever seen with the letter "E" (most of the others we have seen feature the letters "J", "B," or "N"), and, given the pin's rarity, it is likely that the promotion ended long before all the other letters were distributed. Produced by "Samuel H. Moss Inc. New York" as noted in print along the rim. The pin (1.5" in diameter) displays a tiny scratch at approximately 8:00 o'clock and light oxidation on the reverse; otherwise it remains in Near Mint condition. A superb example of the most desirable and elusive Jackie Robinson pinback in the hobby.
