Displayed is a rare in high-grade Summer Issue of Negro Heroes (No.2), with Jackie Robinson on the cover. This is a magazine issue that was published by Parents' Magazine Institute in 1948. The magazine is sub-titled "TRUE STORIES TOLD IN FULL COLOR." The Negro Heroes magazine used comics to portray its stories, and the magazine only published two issues, regrettable since the issues displayed a real effort to advance true stories about the accomplishments of African Americans. Measuring 7.5x10.75", the magazine cover portrays Jackie Robinson, in a uniform whose jersey reads "Dodgers," catching a ball in a stadium setting. In 1948, Robinson was playing in his second Major League season. In his first season in 1947, he hit .297, stole a league-leading 29 bases, helped the Dodgers to the pennant, and was the National League Rookie of the Year as he broke the Major League "Color Line." Robinson continued his success in '48 as he hit 296, with 22 stolen bases. The Negro Heroes No. 2 issue has stories about Jackie Robinson, Booker T. Washington, Sadie T.M. Alexander, Toussaint Louventure (a Haitian freedom fighter), Sugarchile Robinson, and the U.S. Army 784th Tank Battalion, an African American unit who were heroes at the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. The magazine has been encapsulated and graded by CGC 8.5. The CGC Pop report lists this issue as 1 of 5, ONLY 5 HIGHER.
