Original glass plate negative capturing New York Giants pitcher Christy Mathewson warming up on the sideline prior to a 1911 World Series game against the Philadelphia Athletics at the Polo Grounds. The name "Matty" is written along the top border. Although no year is listed, the all-black uniform Mathewson is wearing was specially produced for use only during the 1911 fall classic. Mathewson won Game 1 of the Series 2-1, but he lost both Games 3 and 4 as the A's defeated the Giants in six games to win their second consecutive World Championship.
