In his prime, boxer Jack Johnson was the most famous African American on the planet. For years the reigning "colored" World Heavyweight Champion, Johnson overcame the extensive racial prejudice of his time and defeated Canadian Tommy Burns on December 26, 1908, to become the first African American World Heavyweight Champion. Johnson successfully defended his World Title a number of times, but former undefeated World heavyweight Champion James J. Jeffries was convinced to end an over five-year retirement to become "The Great White Hope" and oppose Johnson in "The Fight of the Century" on July 4, 1910. After losing 110 pounds to get to his fighting weight of 226 pounds, Jeffries was out of shape and no match for Johnson, who gave Jeffries his lone career defeat. Race riots followed in many states. Johnson dated white women, and his marriage to a white woman engendered much racial prejudice. He was convicted of violating the Mann Act for allegedly transporting a woman across state lines for immoral purposes. The photos depict Johnson in training, in the ring, and at leisure in stylish civilian clothes. All but a couple would grade as Type I. One may show Johnson in Europe in exile from the United States because of his aforementioned conviction. A few are also mounted, and thus would not be able to be graded by PSA. Some are very rare images, and several are with his wife. Overall, in Very Good condition.
